Michael C. Mankins Biography

Michael C. Mankins is a Bain & Company partner and a thought leader in the firm's strategy and organization practices. Much of his work has been on strategic and organizational efforts that generate long-term value and performance. Mankins has counseled corporate executives in a variety of industries, including automotive, aerospace, chemicals, diversified manufacturing, energy, media, technology, and financial services, with over 22 years of consulting expertise. He's written and talked a lot about strategy execution, especially when it comes to excellent decision-making. He co-authored the book Decide and Deliver: Five Steps to Breakthrough Performance in Your Organization with Marcia Blenko and Paul Rogers (forthcoming from Harvard Business Review Press, September 2010). He's also a co-author of The Value Imperative: Managing for Superior Shareholder Returns, alongside James M. McTaggart and Peter W. Kontes (Free Press, 1994). In addition, he has written or co-authored several articles for Harvard Business Review, including “The Decision-Driven Organization” (June 2010), coauthored with Blenko and Rogers; “How the Best Divest” (October 2008), co-authored with David Harding and Rolf-Magnus Weddigen; and “Borrowing from the PE Playbook,” co-authored with David Harding and Rolf-Magnus Weddigen; and “Borrowing from the PE Playbook (The HBR List, February 2007). His work has featured in Harvard Management Update, the Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times, the New York Times, and other prestigious journals. Mankins was selected as one of the year's top 25 consultants by Consulting Magazine in 2006. Mankins earned a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Kentucky and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
