About Michael A. Wheeler

Michael A. Wheeler Biography

Michael Wheeler is a Harvard Business School MBA Class of 1952 Professor of Management Practice who teaches Negotiation and The Moral Leader, as well as a range of executive courses. He was formerly the faculty chair of the first-year MBA program and the instructor of the compulsory Negotiation course. He has also taught Leadership, Values, and Decision Making, as well as Mediation and Consensus Building as a Visiting Professor at Harvard Law School. For his contributions to the School's purpose, he earned the Greenhill Award at HBS. Negotiation dynamics, conflict resolution, organizational design, and ethics are among Wheeler's current research interests. He is the editor of the Negotiation Journal and the co-director of the Inter-University Program on Negotiation's Negotiation Pedagogy project. Wheeler has written or co-authored nine books, the most recent of which is What's Fair? Ethics for Negotiators, Business Fundamentals in Negotiation, and On Teaching Negotiation (all with Carrie Merkel-Meadow). His book Environmental Dispute Resolution (co-authored with Lawrence Bacow) received the CPR-annual ADR's award for best negotiation book. He has published several papers in academic publications (such as the Yale Journal of Regulation, Harvard Negotiation Law Review, and The Journal of Applied Psychoanalytic Studies) as well as the popular press (such as The Atlantic Monthly and The New York Times). He's also created a number of negotiating exercises, cases, notes, and self-evaluation tools. These resources cover a wide range of topics, including nonverbal communication and complexity theory, as well as comparisons between negotiating tactics and jazz and warfighting. He has documented GE's "early dispute settlement effort" and Guinness's procedure for approving acquisitions and joint ventures in detailed case studies on negotiation system design. He's researching the emotions and unconscious attitudes that people bring to the negotiation table with colleagues Gerald Zaltman and Kimberlyn Leary. He's also looking at nonverbal communication and lie detection in negotiations with Clark Freshman. From 1981 until 1993, Wheeler was a professor in MIT's Department of Urban Studies and Planning, where he also served as Director of Research at the MIT Center for Real Estate Development. He was previously the Director of Education and Research at the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy and a law professor at New England Law School. He has also taught at the University of Colorado and the Politecnico di Torino in Italy as a Visiting Professor. He has made several appearances on Boston and other public television stations. He graduated from Amherst College, Boston University, and Harvard Law School, and became a member of the Massachusetts bar in 1969. He has worked as a mediator or arbitrator in a range of commercial and regulatory issues and has been a panelist for the American Arbitration Association. In the United States and overseas, he has counseled business clients, trade groups, and government agencies on negotiating challenges.
