Merrick Brian Garland is a legal professional and judge currently serving as the 86th United States attorney general, a position he has held since March 2021. Before his appointment, he served as a judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit from 1997 to 2021.
In March 2016, President Barack Obama nominated Garland to the Supreme Court, but his nomination was met with resistance from the Republican Senate majority, who refused to hold a hearing or vote on his candidacy. This unprecedented move was controversial and lasted 293 days, making it the longest in history. Garland's nomination expired on January 3, 2017, without a vote.
