Melody Swartz Biography

Melody A. Swartz is a William B. Ogden Professor at the University of Chicago's Institute for Molecular Engineering, where she also has a dual-position at the Ben May Department for Cancer Research. She began her independent career as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Northwestern University before moving to the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), where she rose through the ranks to Full Professor and eventually became Director of the Institute of Bioengineering. She is a bioengineer who utilizes quantitative immunobiology and physiology techniques, such as biotransport and biomechanics, to learn more about how the lymphatic system regulates immunity in homeostasis and illness, notably in cancer and chronic inflammation. Her group uses this information to create new cancer immunotherapeutic methods, such as lymph node-targeting vaccines and in vitro model systems that mimic important aspects of the tumor-immune interface. Swartz has received several awards, including being appointed a MacArthur Fellow in 2012 and being inducted to the National Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2018. Swartz earned a BS in Chemical Engineering from Johns Hopkins and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from MIT, as well as postdoctoral study at Harvard Medical School and Brigham & Women's Hospital.
