Melissa Garren Biography

Melissa Garren researches marine bacteria in order to learn more about how pollution and climate change are damaging coral reefs and impacting our ecosystem. She began utilizing molecular tools to explore microbial life in the water while on a Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute scholarship. Melissa assisted in the development of a long-term monitoring study as well as educational programs at the Costa Rican wildlife sanctuary. She recently received her Ph.D. in Marine Biology from Scripps Institution of Oceanography's Center for Marine Biodiversity and Conservation and is now working as a postdoctoral researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she is using microfluidic technology to better understand the living ecosystem of coral reefs.
