The Lip Bar exists as a revolutionary beauty brand through the leadership of Melissa Butler who established the company to provide vegan and cruelty-free products while promoting inclusivity and clean ingredients. Melissa Butler spent her early years in Detroit Michigan before graduating from Florida A&M University with a Business Finance degree to become a Wall Street licensed stockbroker. The beauty industry lacked both diverse representation and non-toxic products which led her to feel unfulfilled despite her finance career success.
Butler used her kitchen in Brooklyn to start making vegan lipsticks during 2012 after she became fed up with the situation. She established The Lip Bar to create premium inclusive beauty solutions which challenge conventional beauty standards that discriminate against women of color. The tough Shark Tank rejection did not break Butler because it only made her more determined. The company continued to evolve until Butler moved operations to Detroit while adding new products to their range beyond lipsticks.
