Jamie Farr was born to Lebanese-American parents Jamelia and Samuel N. Farah, a grocer, in Toledo, Ohio. His family belonged to the Antiochian Orthodox Christian faith. Farr's first acting breakthrough came when he was eleven years old and won $2 in a local acting competition. Farr joined the Pasadena Playhouse after a brilliant high school career in which he was one of his class's standouts when an MGM talent scout noticed him and offered him a screen test for The Blackboard Jungle. He was cast as Santini, a mentally handicapped pupil.
