Megan Leavey is a former US Marine corporal who worked as a K9 handler for the Military Police. She was born and raised in Valley Cottage, New York. Leavey joined the Marine Corps in 2003 and was stationed at Camp Pendleton, California, alongside military working dog Rex (E168). They served in Iraq together during two deployments.
They were sent to Fallujah in 2005, and then to Ramadi in 2006 when they were both injured by an IED. Leavey received the Purple Heart as well as the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with a V device for combat heroism.
