Mayda del Valle, who was named one of 20 women on Oprah's first O Power List, has been described as having "a way with words" by the Chicago Sun-Times. Indeed, the renowned performance poet is a force to be reckoned with.
She was the first Latina to win the 2001 National Poetry Slam Individual Championship after winning the 2001 Nuyorican Grand Slam Championship. Del Valle has appeared on HBO's Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry several times, and was an original cast member and contributing writer in the Tony Award-winning Broadway production of Russell Simmons Def Poetry Jam.
