Matthew Winkler Biography
Matthew Winkler is the editor-in-chief of Bloomberg News, a worldwide news service he co-founded with Michael Bloomberg in 1990 when he joined the eight-year-old financial information firm Bloomberg L.P. In 2006, he was elected to the Bloomberg L.P. board of directors. Bloomberg News produces more than 5,000 articles daily on the economy, corporations, governments, financial and commodities markets, as well as the arts and sports, with 2,000 editors and reporters in 150 bureaus covering print and broadcast media throughout North and South America, Europe, and Asia. Winkler received the 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award from the City University of New York Graduate School of Journalism, the 2007 Gerald Loeb Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing "exceptional career achievements in business, financial, and economic news writing," and the 2007 National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences "Emmy" Lifetime Achievement Award for business and financial reporting from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Bloomberg News' reporting of market manipulation in the 1990s prompted the Securities and Exchange Commission to enact Reg FD, and the Federal Reserve's disclosure of unprecedented loans during the 2007-2008 financial crisis came after courts upheld Bloomberg's Freedom of Information Act suit against the central bank. Bloomberg News has been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize three times and has won over 400 honors. Winkler is the co-author of Bloomberg by Bloomberg (John Wiley & Sons, April 1997) and The Bloomberg Way: A Guide for Reporters and Editors (John Wiley & Sons, April 1997). (2012, Wiley). He was the Capital Markets columnist for Forbes magazine from 1991 until 1994. Winkler worked as a reporter for the Wall Street Journal, Barron's, and Dow Jones & Co. news services in New York and London between July 1980 and February 1990. Winkler worked as a reporter and assistant editor for The Bond Buyer in New York from 1978 to 1980, as well as a reporter for the Mount Vernon News in Ohio (1976-1977). Winkler, who was born in New York City in 1955, is a graduate of Kenyon College (A.B. in history, honorary doctorate of laws); trustee of Kenyon and The Kenyon Review; trustee of the City University of New York's business journalism program; director of the International Center for Journalists; member of the board of the Committee to Protect Journalists; and the Council on Foreign Relations.
