Matthew West Biography

American actor, singer-songwriter and contemporary Christian musician popularly known as Matthew Joseph West was born on April 25, 1977. With five studio albums released, he is known for his songs, “The Motions,” “You Are Everything,” and “More.” In 2005, he was nominated for five Dove Awards and two of which were for Happy, his major label debut album. West won the 2013 American Music Award in the Best Contemporary Inspirational Artist category. In the late 1990s, he began his career as an independent artist, releasing three independent albums before he got signed to Universal South Records. In 2003, with the release of his Dove Award-winning debut album, Happy, his first radio single, “More” stayed at the No. 1 spot for nine weeks on Christian Adult Contemporary charts and this got him nominated for two Dove Awards. His second album, History, his second album, was followed by a 2006 re-release of Sellout, his originally independent album. He battled voice related problems in 2007 which challenged his career and had to take a vocal rest for two months. His third studio album, Something to Say, was successful on the charts with “The Motions” and “ You Are Everything” peaking at No. 1. West used his songwriting skills to write songs for numerous Christian musicians, groups and mainstream country artists like Billy Ray Cyrus, Vince Gill, Mandisa, Natalie Grant, Casting Crowns, Point of Grace and Rascal Flatts; all while maintaining his solo career. From his album, Into the Light, his second single “Hello, My Name Is” was released in 2013 and peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Christian Songs chart for 17 consecutive weeks.
