Matthew Salzberg Biography

Matt Salzberg is the co-founder and CEO of Blue Apron, a meal box service that includes ingredients and recipes, as well as the co-founder of Embark Vet, a company that offers complete genetic testing for dogs. Salzberg, Ilia Papas, and Matt Wadiak tested the initial Blue Apron recipes in their cramped New York City homes in the summer of 2012. Their mission was to make cooking with high-quality produce and specialist ingredients available to everyone, regardless of where they lived or how busy they were. The three hand-picked the first Blue Apron boxes and personally delivered them to family and friends, receiving good comments almost immediately. Years later, Blue Apron has grown enormously, and as a team, we strive to live out our goal every day. We send over 3 million meals each month to our home chefs around the country, and we employ hundreds of people across four offices to guarantee that each client receives the best quality food every week. The Blue Apron, worn by trainee cooks in France, has become a symbol of lifelong cooking education. Salzberg worked as a venture capitalist at Bessemer Venture Partners before starting Blue Apron, focusing on the Internet, software, and mobile industries. He began his career as an analyst at Blackstone Group's private equity business, where he remained until the company's initial public offering (IPO). He was involved in numerous deals there, including Nielsen's take-private and Centennial's dividend recapitalization. Salzberg also spent time at Blackstone's Hong Kong office, where he assessed assets in Thailand, Indonesia, and Australia. Matt graduated from Harvard University with a B.A. in economics and an MBA, summa cum laude. Matt was on the Board of Directors of Harvard Student Agencies and oversaw the laundry, dry-cleaning, and linen-rental company while earning his undergraduate degree, receiving Manager of the Year for bringing the firm around. He is also a member of the SelectMinds Board of Directors, a social job recruitment firm. Astronomy, archaeology, marine biology, and economics are among his favorite Petridsh research projects.
