Johnstone subsequently moved on to Merkley and Partners as Associate Creative Director, where he stayed for the required four years. He chose to shift careers after 12 years in the advertising sector. Since 2009, Johnstone has worked as a creative consultant for the Black Dog Institute, an organization that promotes mental health awareness and education. He is presently in charge of his own brand, Drawn From Experience, which covers all of his speaking, writing, and consulting activities. He is the author of several novels, the most well-known of which is 'I Had a Black Dog,' and the most current of which is 'Quiet the Mind.' Both works deal with depression in some way.
