Matthew Carter Biography

Matthew Carter is a type designer who has worked with a variety of typographic technologies, from hand-cut punches to computer typefaces, for over fifty years. He was a co-founder of Bitstream Inc., the digital type foundry, in 1981, after a lengthy relationship with the Linotype businesses. He worked there for 10 years. Carter & Cone Type Inc. in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he is currently a principal, designs and produces unique fonts. ITC Galliard, Snell Roundhand, and Shelley scripts, Helvetica Compressed, Olympian (for newspaper text), Bell Centennial (for telephone directories in the United States), ITC Charter, and faces for Greek, Hebrew, Cyrillic, and Devanagari are among his type designs. He created Mantinia, Sophia, Elephant, Big Caslon, Alisal, and Miller for Carter & Cone. Time, Newsweek, Wired, U.S. News & World Report, Sports Illustrated, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The New York Times, BusinessWeek, The Walker Art Center, the Museum of Modern Art, Yale University, and the Hamilton Wood Type Museum have all commissioned Carter & Cone to create type. Carter began working with Microsoft on a series of "screen typefaces" in the mid-1990s to improve the readability of text on computer monitors. Verdana, Tahoma, and Nina (a condensed face for hand-held devices) are sanserif designs, whereas Georgia is a serif. Carter is a Senior Critic in Yale's Graphic Design department and a Royal Designer for Industry. A Chrysler Award for Innovation in Design, an AIGA medal, and a Type Directors Club award have all been bestowed upon him. He was given a MacArthur Fellowship in 2010 and the Smithsonian National Design Awards Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011.
