Matthew Carter is a type designer who has worked with a variety of typographic technologies, from hand-cut punches to computer typefaces, for over fifty years. He was a co-founder of Bitstream Inc., the digital type foundry, in 1981, after a lengthy relationship with the Linotype businesses. He worked there for 10 years. Carter & Cone Type Inc.
in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he is currently a principal, designs and produces unique fonts. ITC Galliard, Snell Roundhand, and Shelley scripts, Helvetica Compressed, Olympian (for newspaper text), Bell Centennial (for telephone directories in the United States), ITC Charter, and faces for Greek, Hebrew, Cyrillic, and Devanagari are among his type designs.
