Matt was born in Bristol England in 1974. He trained as a marine biologist first at Bangor University and then at Aberdeen University and gained an MSc with distinction in Marine and Fisheries Science.
The Sudur Havid was his first deployment as a Scientific Observer - he went on to complete another deployment (without sinking) before moving on to a warmer drier career. Matt worked as a presenter at Blue Planet Aquarium and at Chester Zoo where he organised and gave educational talks and animal handling sessions.
