Charman was born in Crawley West Sussex. His 2015 feature film Bridge of Spies is a Cold War thriller directed by Steven Spielberg and co-written by Charman and Joel and Ethan Coen. The film starred Tom Hanks Mark Rylance and Amy Ryan and has earned him a Best Original Screenplay nomination at both the 2016 Academy Awards and BAFTA Awards.
