Charman was born in Crawley West Sussex. His 2015 feature film Bridge of Spies is a Cold War thriller directed by Steven Spielberg and co-written by Charman and Joel and Ethan Coen. The film starred Tom Hanks Mark Rylance and Amy Ryan and has earned him a Best Original Screenplay nomination at both the 2016 Academy Awards and BAFTA Awards.
He has also been nominated for a WGA award and Critics' Choice award in the same category. Previously he co-wrote Suite Française (2014) with director Saul Dibb starring Michelle Williams Kristin Scott Thomas and Margot Robbie.
