Being the sixth of eight children, Ashford hails from a huge family. He earned a B.F.A. in Theater from Winston-North Salem's Carolina School of the Arts. He relocated to New York City after college and landed the part of Drew Ralston on One Life to Live, which he portrayed from 1982 to 1983.
From 1984 to 1986, he played Cagney McCleary on Search for Tomorrow. From 1987 to 1993, 2001 to 2003, and now since 2004, he played Jack Deveraux on the NBC soap opera Days of Our Lives.
