Mary Zimmerman received a MacArthur Fellowship in 1998, a Tony Award for Best Director of a Play in 2002, and ten Joseph Jefferson Awards (including Best Production and Best Direction). She is a member of Chicago's Lookingglass Theatre Company, as well as an Artistic Associate at the Goodman Theatre and a Professor of Performance Studies at Northwestern University.

The Jungle Book (Goodman, Huntington), White Snake (Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Berkeley Rep), Argonautika (Lookingglass, Berkeley Rep, Shakespeare Theatre Co), and many others are among the works she has adapted and directed. In the fall of 2007, she made her Metropolitan Opera directing debut with Lucia di Lammermoor, followed by Armida and La Sonnambula.
