Mary Stockwell Biography

Mary Stockwell is a historian, author, and former history professor and department chair at Lourdes University. She is the author of several history books for children, including The Ohio Adventure, A Journey through Maine, and Massachusetts, Our Home, which won the Golden Lamp Award for Best Book from the Association of Educational Publishers in 2005. She is also the author of The Other Trail of Tears: The Removal of the Ohio Indians, which was a 2016 finalist for the Ohio Library Association's Best Book Award; Woodrow Wilson: The Last Romantic, which was a 2018 Dartmouth Medal nominee; and The American Story: Perspectives and Encounters to 1865, which was a 2018 Dartmouth Medal nominee. Unlikely General: Mad Anthony Wayne and the Battle for America and Interrupted Odyssey: Ulysses S. Grant and the American Indians are her most recent works. Her writings on George Washington, James Madison, Abraham Lincoln, Woodrow Wilson, and Franklin D. Roosevelt have been published in prestigious academic journals. I've written for George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate website. In Sons of the Father: Washington and His Protégés, I wrote an essay called "Most Loyal but Forgotten Son: Anthony Wayne and George Washington." Stockwell is a recipient of an Earhart Foundation Fellowship at the University of Michigan's William L. Clements Library.
