Mary Poppendieck began her career as a process control programmer, then went on to oversee a manufacturing plant's IT department before landing in product development as a product advocate and department manager. In 1998, Poppendiekck contemplated retiring but instead found herself leading a government software project when she first heard the term waterfall.
When she compared her experience with successful software and product development to the current views on how to manage software projects, she realized it was time for a new paradigm. In 2003, she published the award-winning book Lean Software Development: An Agile Toolkit, which explains how lean manufacturing concepts may be applied to software development.
