Mary Moran Biography

I am originally from Blackrock (Malone) and now live in Haggardstown with my husband Damian and five teenage children. I am a teacher in St Vincent's Secondary School Dundalk one of the largest secondary schools in the country where I have witnessed firsthand the effect of cuts to education spending particularly in the area of special needs. I was privileged to stand as a General Election candidate for The Labour Party in the Louth Constituency earlier this year I joined the Labour Party because I strongly believe in its core values of equality community and democracy. One of my main motivating reasons for standing in the 2011 election was to campaign on behalf of those with a disability particularly an intellectual disability. I am a long-time campaigner against the downgrading of services for people with an intellectual disability and have instead sought improvements to those services. I serve on the Parents Council and Board of Management of St Mary's Special School Drumcar. Since 2003 I have been a member of the school's Board of Management and I am a serving member of the school's Parents' Council having held the position of Chairperson from 2001 to 2011. I have long campaigned against cuts to frontline services such as respite speech therapy occupational therapy and psychological services have impacted on users. I am also very active in the field of music in Dundalk. I have worked on various musicals and music projects at local level working with the youth of Dundalk. I am the founder of my school orchestra which has achieved national and international acclaim. I believe that the promotion and development of the Arts and Creative Indsutries must play a central role in the economic and social recovery of our country - a philosophy that resonates in the Labour Party maxim of Bread and Roses. My campaign in the General Election clearly struck a note with the electorate and I was privileged to receive more than 4500 first preference votes and a total of almost 7000 votes as a first time candidate. My candidacy is played a pivotal role in Ged Nash regaining the Labour seat which was lost in 2002. My hope is now to build up the Labour Party in North Louth and Dundalk. I want to continue to work on behalf of the people of North Louth and to continue to campaign and work on issues of disability the arts and education.
