On April 10, 2013, Mary Jo White was sworn in as the SEC's 31st Chairperson. President Barack Obama nominated her to be SEC Chair on February 7, 2013, and the Senate approved her on April 8. Chairman White has decades of expertise as a federal prosecutor and securities lawyer, which he brought to the SEC.
She specialized in prosecuting complicated securities and financial institution frauds, as well as international terrorist cases, as the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York from 1993 to 2002. The office gained convictions against the terrorists responsible for the 1993 World Trade Center attack and the bombings of American embassies in Africa during her supervision.
