Mary Jo White Biography

On April 10, 2013, Mary Jo White was sworn in as the SEC's 31st Chairperson. President Barack Obama nominated her to be SEC Chair on February 7, 2013, and the Senate approved her on April 8. Chairman White has decades of expertise as a federal prosecutor and securities lawyer, which he brought to the SEC. She specialized in prosecuting complicated securities and financial institution frauds, as well as international terrorist cases, as the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York from 1993 to 2002. The office gained convictions against the terrorists responsible for the 1993 World Trade Center attack and the bombings of American embassies in Africa during her supervision. She is the first woman to occupy the role of president in the office's 200-year existence. Chairman White served as the First Assistant U.S. Attorney and then-Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York from 1990 to 1993 before becoming the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. She previously worked as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York from 1978 to 1981 before becoming the Criminal Division's Chief Appellate Attorney. Chairman White became chair of the litigation department at Debevoise & Plimpton in New York after leaving her position as U.S. Attorney. She oversaw a staff of more than 200 lawyers. Chairman White previously served as an associate at the company from 1976 to 1978 and as a litigation partner from 1983 to 1990. Chairman White graduated from William & Mary with a Phi Beta Kappa undergraduate degree and a master's degree in psychology from The New School for Social Research in 1971. She graduated from Columbia Law School in 1974, where she was a member of the Law Review. She worked as a law clerk for the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York's Honorable Marvin E. Frankel. Chairman White has received several honors for her exceptional efforts as a prosecutor and securities attorney. She was voted Regulatory Lawyer of the Year at the 2012 Chambers USA Women in Law Awards. The Margaret Brent Women Lawyers of Achievement Award, the George W. Bush Award for Excellence in Counterterrorism, the Sandra Day O'Connor Award for Distinction in Public Service, and the National Organization for Women's Women of Power and Influence Award are among the awards she has won. Chairman White is a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers and the International College of Trial Lawyers, as well as the American College of Trial Lawyers. She has also served on the executive, audit, and policy committees of The NASDAQ Stock Exchange as a director. Chairman White is a Council on Foreign Relations, member.
