Mary Eberstadt Biography
Mary Tedeschi Eberstadt is a research fellow at the Hoover Institution and a consultant editor for Policy Review, a bimonthly journal of essays and reviews on American politics and society published by the Hoover Institution. Eberstadt's work focuses on themes of American culture, philosophy, and society. She has contributed to Policy Review, the Weekly Standard, First Things, the American Spectator, the Los Angeles Times, the London Times, and The Wall Street Journal, among other publications. The Loser Letters: A Comic Tale of Life, Death, and Atheism is her most recent book (Ignatius Press, 2010). She is also the editor of Why I Turned Right: Leading Baby Boom Conservatives Chronicle Their Political Journeys (Simon & Schuster/Threshold, 2007) and the author of Home-Alone America: The Hidden Toll of Day Care, Behavioral Drugs, and Other Parent Substitutes (Penguin/Sentinel, 2004). “Mothers in Combat Boots” (February/March 2010), “Is Food the New Sex?” (February/March 2009), and “Is Pornography the New Tobacco?” are among her most recent Policy Review pieces. (March/April 2009). “How the West Truly Lost God,” “The Scapegoats Among Us,” “Eminem Is Right,” “The Child-Fat Problem,” “Home-Alone America,” and “Why Ritalin Rules” are among the other pieces. She also contributes to First Things magazine as a writer. “What Does Woman Want?” (October 2009) and “The Will to Disbelieve” (October 2009) are two recent articles there (February 2009). My Irving Kristol and Ours appeared in the Weekly Standard on October 5, 2009, and is available at My Irving Kristol and Ours. She was the executive editor of National Interest magazine from 1998 until 1990. She worked for the US State Department's Policy Planning Staff, as a speechwriter for Secretary of State George P. Shultz, and as a special assistant to Ambassador Jeane J. Kirkpatrick at the United Nations from 1985 to 1987. She was also the Public Interest's managing editor. Eberstadt was a four-year Telluride Scholar at Cornell University, where he earned a magna cum laude degree in 1983.
