About Mary Ann Glendon

Mary Ann Glendon Biography

At Harvard University, Mary Ann Glendon is the Learned Hand Professor of Law. In the disciplines of human rights, comparative law, constitutional law, and legal theory, she publishes and lectures. Mrs. Roosevelt's finest achievement, the formulation of the United Nations' statement of rights so basic that they belong to everyone on earth just by virtue of being human, is the subject of her most recent book, A World Made New: Eleanor Roosevelt and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Glendon earned the Scribes Book Award from the American Society of Writers on Legal Subjects in 1988 for his comparative study Abortion and Divorce in Western Law, which was featured on Bill Moyers' World of Ideas series. Another comparative study, The Transformation of Family Law, received the Order of the Coif Triennial Book Award from the Legal Academy in 1993. She was elected President of the International Association of Legal Science, which is funded by UNESCO, in 1991. Pope John Paul II nominated her to the newly established Pontifical Academy of Social Science in 1994. She led the Holy See's 22-member delegation to the Fourth United Nations Women's Conference in Beijing in 1995. Glendon's works take a comparative approach to a wide range of topics. Professor Glendon was a visiting professor at the University of Chicago Law School and the Gregorian University in Rome and taught at Boston College Law School from 1968 until 1986. She graduated from the University of Chicago with a Bachelor of Arts, Juris Doctor, and Master of Comparative Law. Professor Glendon studied European law at the Universit Libre de Bruxelles and worked as a legal intern for the European Economic Community during a two-year post-graduate fellowship. She worked as a volunteer civil rights attorney and practiced law with the Chicago firm of Mayer, Brown & Platt from 1963 to 1968. She was born in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, and now resides in Chestnut Hill with her husband, Edward R. Lev. They are the parents of three girls.
