Marvin Kalb Biography

Marvin Kalb is a Senior Fellow at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government's Shorenstein Center for the Press, Politics, and Public Policy. He is also a Public Policy Lecturer and Faculty Chair for the School's Washington Programs. Marvin Kalb was the founding director of the Shorenstein Center for Journalism and Public Policy for twelve years, where he also taught and spoke as the Edward R. Murrow Professor of Press and Politics. Mr. Kalb has earned several accolades for excellence in diplomatic reporting over his 30-year career as Chief Diplomatic Correspondent for CBS News and NBC News, as well as moderator of Meet the Press. Mr. Kalb has presented a variety of PBS television shows, including Vox Populi, a four-part documentary on citizen views toward government, and Candidates '88. He is a regular guest on Jim Lehrer's The Newshour, where he delivers media criticism and analysis through radio and television appearances and Op-Ed pieces in the country's major newspapers. Mr. Kalb regularly speaks and moderates discussion programs on problems related to the press, politics, and public policy at journalism schools and policy-analysis groups around the country. Mr. Kalb has conducted two high-profile lecture series in Washington, D.C., that have addressed key challenges affecting the business and practice of journalism today. The Shorenstein Center, The George Washington University, and the National Press Club co-sponsor The Kalb Report, a monthly public affairs program that combines interviews and panel discussions with top journalists and the CEOs of respective organizations. The Brookings/Harvard Forum is a weekly program that began in October 2001 as a way for journalists, government officials, and academics to discuss current events in the War on Terrorism and how they are reported in the media. Mr. Kalb has written or co-written a number of nonfiction works, including Kissinger, Roots of Involvement, The Nixon Memo, and One Scandalous Story, as well as two popular novels. His most recent book, The Media in the War on Terrorism, looks at how to strike a compromise between a free press and the government's need to preserve sensitive information. Mr. Kalb is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is a resident of Chevy Chase, Maryland.
