Marty Metro has a one-of-a-kind "if at first, you don't succeed" mentality... with a track record to back it up! He put everything on the line to be an innovator, and he failed horribly. He opened a network of eco-friendly retail outlets in Los Angeles in 2002 to buy and sell used moving boxes. He aspired to create a national franchise, but his endeavor was rushed, underfunded, and plagued by logistical problems. Metro was forced to close its doors after three years of no income, leaving him and his wife with not just an empty bank account, but also a $300,000 personal debt. Metro got a "day job" as a technology consultant and spent his nights and weekends chasing his ambition, devastated but not disheartened. Just one year later, his unwavering entrepreneurial ambition led him to rework his company strategy, obtain financing, and re-launch a scalable, tech-centric model for buying and selling millions of old boxes. That idea developed into a nationwide logistics business that today works with some of the country's top corporations, and it was reported by nearly every major news outlet. Metro was highlighted in Entrepreneur Magazine's article "From Business Failure to Multimillion-Dollar 'Green' Niche," which is an inspiring example of reconciling financial returns with environmental responsibility. Metro accepts his errors and freely discusses them with audiences, rather than claiming to know "how to achieve." Metro is now a proud member of the Walmart Sustainable Value Networks (SVNs) for both Packaging and Waste, which are invitation-only groups of Walmart suppliers, academics, and government agencies that explore challenges and develop solutions that benefit businesses, local communities, and the global community. Metro is a co-chair of the Los Angeles Venture Association's "LAVA Green" initiative, as well as the previous chairman of the California Resource Recovery Association's Technical Council for Reuse and a board member of the Entrepreneurs Organization of Los Angeles. Before starting his work as a supply chain consultant with Andersen Consulting, Metro graduated from the University of Maryland and received an MBA in Information Systems from the University of Arizona.
