About Mark Wills
Mark Wills Biography
Mark Wills garnered a decent following and positive reviews with the release of his eponymous 1996 first album, while not achieving the popularity or sales of new country peers Tim McGraw or Clay Walker. Wills was a fan of pop-metal bands like Poison and Bon Jovi as a youngster in the small Georgia town of Blue Ridge, and he performed in metal garage bands throughout his adolescence. However, when he grew older, he gravitated toward country-pop and new traditionalist countries. This wasn't surprising, given that he grew up surrounded by country music, singing it at home and at church as a little child. He entered a talent event at the Buckboard Country Music Showcase in neighboring Marietta when he was 17 years old. He won the competition, which led to his performing at the Buckboard on a weekly basis. He played at the club five evenings a week for five years. He began singing on demo tapes in the Atlanta region in addition to his regular gigs, ultimately pushing his way into the Nashville demo scene. He was discovered by Carson Chamberlain and Keith Stegall at one of his Buckboard concerts, and they helped him land a deal with Mercury Nashville. Wills' self-titled first album, released in the fall of 1996, was produced by Chamberlain and Stegall. The single was a minor success, reaching number 38 on the national charts. In 1998, Wills released Wish You Were Here, then in early 2000, he released Permanently. Wish You Were Here, his best-selling album, has been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. The title tune from this album, as well as 19 Somethin' from late 2002, both achieved number one on the country music charts. Apart from these six singles, Jacob's Ladder, Places I've Never Been, I Do (Cherish You), Don't Laugh at Me, She's in Love, and a cover version of Brian McKnight's Back at One have all charted in the Top Ten.
