Mark Walsh Biography

Mark Walsh is an American entrepreneur, venture investor, and political activist who was born in 1954. Walsh earned his bachelor's degree from Union College in 1976. Walsh began his career as a television newscaster for a CBS affiliate in West Virginia. He stayed for two years before departing to obtain an MBA at Harvard Business School, which he earned in 1980. Walsh worked as a director of new business development at HBO for four years after graduating from Harvard. Walsh was named head of GEnie, the company's online service, in 1994. Walsh joined AOL as a senior vice president in 1995. Walsh led AOL Enterprise, the company's business-to-business segment, while at AOL. Walsh became the CEO of VerticalNet, a business-to-business portal provider, in 1997. VerticalNet went public on the NASDAQ in 1999 under Walsh's leadership. Walsh is the managing partner of Ruxton Ventures, LLC, which he started in early 2001 as a private equity and investment business. Walsh joined the University of Maryland's Dingman Center for Entrepreneurship as a senior executive fellow in 2005. Walsh is the CEO, founder, and chairman of GeniusRocket, a crowdsourced advertising media supplier, since 2008. Walsh has been involved in liberal politics and bipartisan policy. He was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Bipartisan Policy Center in Washington, D.C., which was formed by four former US Senate leaders, Tom Daschle, George Mitchell, Howard Baker, and Bob Dole. Walsh was recently appointed to the National Board of the New Leaders Council, a significant leadership development organization for young progressives. Walsh was the CEO of Progress Media, the parent company of Air America Radio, from 2004 until 2006. Walsh was also the Democratic National Committee's Chief Technology Advisor in 2001 and 2002, as well as the Head of Internet Strategy for John Kerry's presidential campaign. Walsh began co-hosting XM Satellite Radio's Left Jab, a weekly political radio show, in 2006.
