Mark Tucker Biography

Marc has long been a pioneer in the standards-based education reform movement. Mr. Tucker founded New Standards, a 23-state partnership aimed at creating internationally benchmarked student performance standards and corresponding student exams. He co-authored the Carnegie Report A Nation Prepared: Teachers for the Twenty-First Century, which called for a standard-based restructuring of America's schools; he founded the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards; and he founded the Commission on the Skills of the American Workforce, which he co-authored the report America's Choice: High Skills or Low Wages! Mr. Tucker co-authored Thinking for a Living: Education and the Wealth of Nations, which was named one of Business Week's ten best business books of 1992; co-authored Standards for Our Schools: How to Set Them, Measure Them, and Reach Them, which was published in 1998; and co-edited The Principal Challenge, which was published in 2002. Mr. Tucker founded the National Institute of School Leadership, which is a cutting-edge executive development program for school administrators. Tough Choices or Tough Times, the study of the New Commission on the Skills of the American Workforce, was co-authored by Mr. Tucker. Mr. Tucker received the James Bryant Conant Award from the Education Commission of the States in 2014 for his exceptional individual contribution to American education. Mr. Tucker is presently a Visiting Distinguished Fellow at Harvard University's Graduate School of Education.
