Mark Knopfler Biography

Mark Freuder Knopfler is a songwriter, musician, record producer, and film soundtrack composer from the United Kingdom. He is best known for co-founding the rock band Dire Straits with his younger brother, David Knopfler, in 1977. He is the lead guitarist, lead singer, and lyricist for the band. Since the disbandment of Dire Straits in 1995, Knopfler has recorded and produced eight solo albums, as well as several successful singles, as he did with his former band. Local Hero, Cal, The Princess Bride, and Wag the Dog are among the eight films for which he created and produced film music. Knopfler has recorded and performed with a number of notable musicians, including Chet Atkins, Chris Botti, John Anderson, the Chieftains, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Bryan Ferry, George Jones, Emmylou Harris, Jools Holland, Sonny Landreth, Phil Lynott, Van Morrison, Steel Dan, Sting, and James Taylor, in addition to his work with Dire Straits and as a solo artist and composer. Tina Turner, Bob Dylan, and Randy Newman have all had records produced by him. Knopfler is a fingerstyle guitarist who was voted 27th among the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time by Rolling Stone magazine. To date, Knopfler and Dire Straits have sold over 120 million records. Knopfler is a four-time Grammy Award-winner who has also received the Edison Award, the Steiger Award, and the Ivor Novello Award, as well as three honorary doctorate degrees in music from UK institutions.
