Mark Freuder Knopfler is a songwriter, musician, record producer, and film soundtrack composer from the United Kingdom. He is best known for co-founding the rock band Dire Straits with his younger brother, David Knopfler, in 1977. He is the lead guitarist, lead singer, and lyricist for the band.
Since the disbandment of Dire Straits in 1995, Knopfler has recorded and produced eight solo albums, as well as several successful singles, as he did with his former band. Local Hero, Cal, The Princess Bride, and Wag the Dog are among the eight films for which he created and produced film music.
