Mark Dion Biography

In 1961, Mark Dion was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts. He graduated from the University of Hartford's School of Art with a BFA in 1986 and an honorary doctorate in 2003. Dion's study looks at how prevailing ideologies and public institutions affect our perceptions of history, science, and the natural world. “The artist's job,” he adds, “is to question perception and tradition by going against the grain of prevailing culture.” Dion produces works that explore the differences between "objective" ("rational") scientific procedures and "subjective" influences by appropriating archaeology and other scientific methods of gathering, arranging, and presenting materials. Modeled by sixteenth-century Wunderkabinetts, the artist's stunning and often surreal curiosity cabinets highlight unusual orderings of items and specimens. Mark Dion calls into question the scientific voice's authoritative role in contemporary society by finding the foundations of environmental politics and public policy in the creation of knowledge about nature. He has earned several honors, including the Larry Aldrich Foundation Award, which he got for the seventh time (2001). At the Miami Art Museum (2006), the Museum of Modern Art in New York (2004), the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, Connecticut (2003), and the Tate Gallery in London (2003), he has held important exhibits (1999). The Seattle Art Museum commissioned Neukom Vivarium (2006), a permanent outdoor installation and learning center for the Olympic Sculpture Park. Dion is based in Pennsylvania and works there.
