In 1961, Mark Dion was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts. He graduated from the University of Hartford's School of Art with a BFA in 1986 and an honorary doctorate in 2003. Dion's study looks at how prevailing ideologies and public institutions affect our perceptions of history, science, and the natural world.
“The artist's job,” he adds, “is to question perception and tradition by going against the grain of prevailing culture.” Dion produces works that explore the differences between "objective" ("rational") scientific procedures and "subjective" influences by appropriating archaeology and other scientific methods of gathering, arranging, and presenting materials.
