Mark Bolas Biography

Mark Bolas is a cognitive scientist who studies perception, agency, and intelligence. His work focuses on developing virtual worlds and transducers that fully engage the senses and produce a visceral recall of the encounter. He works at ICT as an associate director of mixed reality research and development. He is also an associate professor of interactive media at the USC School of Cinematic Arts Interactive Media Division. Bolas is also the chairman of Fakespace Laboratories in Mountain View, California, which he co-founded to provide virtual reality equipment for research labs. He studied physical interfaces, augmented reality, and computational lighting as a professor at Stanford University and Keio University. Context-sensitive audio interfaces, socially interactive toys, augmented reality, confocal illumination, and cell phone weblogging have all been studied in these studies. His work has been shown in a variety of places, including six SIGGRAPH Emerging Technology exhibits, beginning in 1991 with Flatlands, which used the illusion of perspective to transform a sculpture into Mondrian's Composition with Line, 1918; the music-driven worlds of Vacuii and StillLife created with Christian Greuel and Niko Bolas, and the invisibly structured Snared Illumination created with Per. Bolas attended the University of California, San Diego, where he majored in physics and minored in music. He graduated from Stanford University with a master's degree in mechanical engineering. In 1988-89, he worked on his thesis, "Design and Virtual Environments," with Rolf Faste of Stanford's design department and Scott Fisher of NASA's Ames Research Center. It was one of the earliest attempts to outline the scope of virtual reality's potential as a new medium. Bolas developed a basic model for immersive experience design as a result of this work, concluding that the medium's ability to thoroughly transport a user is dependent on striking the right balance between realism and abstraction.
