Mark Bartolini Biography

Mark Bartolini is the Director of USAID's Office of US Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA), which is in charge of organizing and reacting to international humanitarian crises. Bartolini heads a team of 250 dedicated humanitarian response experts who are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to save lives, relieve suffering, and lessen the social and economic effects of international catastrophes and war throughout the world. Bartolini's disaster response expertise includes a 13-year stint with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in New York, where he spent much of his time in the Balkans during the former Yugoslavia's conflicts. He spent over two years in Bosnia and then reacted to the Kosovo war and related refugee problems in Macedonia and Albania later in the decade. NGO coordination, program design and administration, lobbying, and the creation and dissemination of policies and best practices have all been part of Bartolini's disaster response work. Bartolini graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, with a BA in political science and English literature.
