Mario Capecchi was born in 1937 in Verona, Italy. In 1961, he earned a B.S. in chemistry and physics from Antioch College, and in 1967, he earned a Ph.D. in biophysics from Harvard University.
His thesis work included an examination of the mechanisms of nonsense suppression, the initiation of protein synthesis, including the demonstration of Formylmethionine tRNA as the initiator of protein synthesis, and the mechanisms of protein termination, all under the supervision of Dr. James D.
