Mario Capecchi Biography

Mario Capecchi was born in 1937 in Verona, Italy. In 1961, he earned a B.S. in chemistry and physics from Antioch College, and in 1967, he earned a Ph.D. in biophysics from Harvard University. His thesis work included an examination of the mechanisms of nonsense suppression, the initiation of protein synthesis, including the demonstration of Formylmethionine tRNA as the initiator of protein synthesis, and the mechanisms of protein termination, all under the supervision of Dr. James D. Watson. Dr. Capecchi was a Junior Fellow of the Society of Fellows at Harvard University from 1967 to 1969. He joined the Harvard School of Medicine's Department of Biochemistry as an Assistant Professor in 1969. In 1971, he was appointed to Associate Professor. He began his career as a professor of biology at the University of Utah in 1973. Dr. Capecchi has worked as a Howard Hughes Medical Institute scientist since 1988, as a Professor of Human Genetics at the University of Utah School of Medicine since 1989, and as a Distinguished Professor of Human Genetics and Biology since 1993. He is also the co-chairman of the Human Genetics Department. Dr. Capecchi is well recognized for developing gene targeting in mouse embryo-derived stem (ES) cells, which he pioneered. Scientists may use this technique to generate mice with mutations in any gene they want. The investigator may pick which gene to modify and how to mutate it, which gives this technique its strength. The researcher has almost full control over how he or she manipulates DNA sequences in the genomes of living mice. This enables scientists to assess the function of any gene during the mouse's development or post-developmental period in great detail. His scientific interests include molecular genetics of early mouse development, mammalian brain development, the establishment of murine models of human genetic disorders, gene therapy, homologous recombination, and controlled genomic rearrangements in mice. Dr. Capecchi is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the European Academy of Sciences, both of which he joined in 1991. (2002). He has received numerous honors, including the Bristol-Myers Squibb Award for Distinguished Achievement in Neuroscience Research (1992), the Gairdner Foundation International Award for Achievements in Medical Sciences (1993), the Alfred P. Sloan Jr. Prize for Outstanding Basic Science Contributions to Cancer Research (1994), the German Molecular Bioanalytics Prize (1996), the Kyoto Prize in Basic Sciences (1996), the Franklin Medal for Advancing Biological Knowledge (1996), and several others.
