Marilyn Tavenner Biography

From 2011 to 2015, Marilyn Tavenner was the Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, a division of the US Department of Health and Human Services. She worked at HCA Healthcare from 1981 until 2005, starting as a nurse at the Johnston-Willis Hospital in Richmond, Virginia, and eventually rising to become the hospital's Chief Executive Officer in 1993. She joined HCA in 2001 as President of the Central Atlantic Division and then became Group President of Outpatient Services before departing in 2005. After Donald Berwick's retirement in December 2011, she became Acting Administrator after operating as the agency's Principal Deputy Administrator. She was Secretary of Health and Human Resources in Virginia Governor Tim Kaine's Cabinet from 2006 to 2010, prior to her nomination to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. On May 15, 2013, Tavenner was confirmed as Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Tavenner was instrumental in the launch of the Affordable Care Act website, HealthCare.gov, which allows consumers to sign up for healthcare plans. The site had a lot of difficulties for people attempting to join, and Tavenner apologized on October 29, 2013. In her prepared statement, she stated, "The first customer experience of HealthCare.gov has not lived up to the expectations of the American people, and is not acceptable," and added, "We are committed to resolving these shortcomings as quickly as possible." She declared her retirement in January 2015, and Andy Slavitt took over as interim administration after Tavenner's departure. Slavitt joined the organization in July of 2014. He had previously worked for UnitedHealth Group's Optum division as a prominent executive. The Board of Directors of America's Health Insurance Plans overwhelmingly elected her as president and CEO on July 15, 2015.
