From 2011 to 2015, Marilyn Tavenner was the Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, a division of the US Department of Health and Human Services. She worked at HCA Healthcare from 1981 until 2005, starting as a nurse at the Johnston-Willis Hospital in Richmond, Virginia, and eventually rising to become the hospital's Chief Executive Officer in 1993.
She joined HCA in 2001 as President of the Central Atlantic Division and then became Group President of Outpatient Services before departing in 2005. After Donald Berwick's retirement in December 2011, she became Acting Administrator after operating as the agency's Principal Deputy Administrator.
