Marianne Bertrand Biography
At the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, Marianne Bertrand is the Chris P. Dialynas Distinguished Service Professor of Economics. She works at the National Bureau of Economic Research, the Center for Economic Policy Research, and the Institute for the Study of Labor as a Research Fellow. Professor Bertrand is a labor economist, corporate finance expert, and development economist whose research spans the disciplines of labor economics, corporate finance, and development economics. Her work in these fields has appeared in a number of journals, including the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the Journal of Political Economy, the American Economic Review, and the Journal of Finance. Professor Bertrand is a Co-Director of the Social Enterprise Initiative at Chicago Booth. She also serves on the Faculty Advisory Board for the University of Chicago's Collegium for Culture and Society, as well as the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab's Board of Directors. In addition, Professor Bertrand is a co-editor of the American Economic Review. She has won several prizes and accolades, including the American Economic Association's Elaine Bennett Research Prize in 2004 to recognize and celebrate excellent research in any field of economics by a woman at the start of her career, and the Society of Labor Economists' Rosen Prize in 2012. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Professor Bertrand was born in Belgium and got his bachelor's degree in economics from the Universite Libre de Bruxelles in 1991, followed by a master's degree in econometrics the following year. She went to the United States in 1993 and graduated from Harvard University with a Ph.D. in economics in 1998. Before joining Chicago Booth in 2000, she spent two years on the faculty of Princeton University's Department of Economics.
