Maria Konnikova is a Russian-American psychologist and writer. She graduated from Harvard University with a B.A. in psychology and creative writing and a Ph.D. in psychology from Columbia University. She's worked as a television producer, written for a variety of periodicals and websites, and published two New York Times best-selling novels.

She focuses on psychology and how it may be applied to real-life circumstances. The Confidence Game (Viking/Penguin, 2016) and Mastermind: How to Think Like Sherlock Holmes (Viking/Penguin, 2013) are both New York Times bestselling books by Maria.

She's a contributing writer for The New Yorker, where she writes a regular piece about psychology and culture, and she's presently working on a number of nonfiction and fiction projects. She enjoys poker and describes it as a method to study the mind's reactions to situations involving both skill and chance.

Her next book will investigate...poker as a metaphor for life in general. To do research for this book, Konnikova contacted Erik Seidel, who agreed to let her see him compete in a high-stakes poker tournament. She began playing in bigger stakes tournaments after starting with $20 and $40 tournaments.

Konnikova is a full-time professional poker player and an ambassador for the Poker League of Nations, the largest women's poker organization in the world. In 2018, Konnikova decided to put her book on hold in order to play in additional high-stakes poker events.
