Maria Eitel Biography

Maria Eitel is the chair of the Girl Effect and the creator of the Nike Foundation. In 2004, the Nike Foundation launched the Girl Effect program under her supervision. Eitel founded Girl Effect because she believes that adolescent girls have the power to break the cycle of poverty. Girl Effect is a media business that creates young brands and mobile platforms to reach out to vulnerable and underprivileged females. They've created a variety of mediums, ranging from skill-building applications to TV shows that tackle important problems to publications produced and distributed by women. The Girl Effect's remarkable discovery that investing in teenage girls may change a country's economic development has been recognized by Bloomberg Businessweek, Forbes, the New York Times, and others, and World Bank estimates show a startling impact. More than $250 million has been committed by the Nike Foundation and its partners to address educational and other hurdles in order to provide chances for millions of underprivileged teenage girls throughout the world. In the late 1990s, Eitel was Nike's first Vice President of Corporate Responsibility, guiding the business through difficult labor challenges in its worldwide manufacturing base. Her goal was to bring about long-term transformation at Nike and in the industry, resolving the conflict between profit and prosperity for everybody. Eitel's career has spanned the government, media, business, and non-profit sectors, and she is well-known for her ability to develop exceptional teams. She oversaw corporate, public, and community efforts for Microsoft's European division from Paris, France, public affairs for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, communications and community relations for MCI, and media affairs for the United States White House before joining Nike, Inc. Eitel holds a Master of Science in Foreign Service from Georgetown University and a Bachelor of Science from McGill University, in addition to her Honorary Doctorate of Humanity from Babson College. She's also a Stanford Graduate School of Business Executive Program graduate.
