About Margot Adler

Margot Adler Biography

NPR journalist Margot Adler is located in NPR's New York Bureau. Her stories may be heard on All Things Considered, Morning Edition, and Weekend Edition on a regular basis. Adler's stories include in-depth features examining the intersection of politics and culture, in addition to extending New York City. In 1982, she was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University. Adler was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, and grew up in New York City, the granddaughter of famed Viennese psychiatrist Alfred Adler. Birding and science fiction are two of her favorite pastimes. She's been covering the debate over the proposed Islamic Cultural Center near Ground Zero most lately. Other recent stories have looked at the impact of budget cuts on education, the Pakistani community's flood relief efforts in the United States, the military's Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy, and the debates over the September 11th monument, as well as the human narrative. The death penalty, affirmative action, and the culture wars have all been subjects of her reporting. Since then, Adler has chronicled the Harry Potter craze, having conducted the first American radio interview with J.K. Rowling. Her coverage includes topics such as children and technology, the Percy Jackson craze, and the appeal of vampires. For NPR's Arts desk, she reviews books, covers plays, art exhibitions, and auctions, among other things. Adler hosted NPR's Justice Talking, a weekly broadcast that explored constitutional challenges in the courts, from 1999 until 2008. In 1979, Adler joined NPR as a general assignment correspondent. In Greensboro, North Carolina, she filmed a conflict between leftists and the Ku Klux Klan in 1980. She investigated and produced an outstanding documentary about San Francisco AIDS counselors in 1984. She covered the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary and the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo. She has written about homeless people living in subways, the condition of the middle class, and the last remaining American leprosy hospital, which was in Louisiana. Adler produced and presented live conversation shows on WBAI-FM in New York City from 1972 through 1990. One of the shows, Jim Freund's Hour of the Wolf, is still running as a science fiction show today. She is the writer of Drawing Down the Moon, research of modern environmental religions, and Heretic's Heart, a memoir from the 1960s. She is a professor and workshop leader who co-produced the award-winning radio play War Day. She's presently working on a book about why vampires are so popular in our society. Adler received a Bachelor of Arts in political science from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Master of Science in journalism from Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism in 1970.
