Margaret Wheatley Biography

Margaret Wheatley has worked in a variety of professions across the world since 1966, including speaker, teacher, community worker, consultant, adviser, and formal leader. She has acquired the unshakeable belief that leaders must learn how to elicit people's innate generosity, creativity, and yearning for the community as a result of these rich and varied experiences. Wheatley earned her Ph.D. in Administration, Planning, and Social Policy from Harvard University, with an emphasis on organizational behavior and transformation. Margaret Wheatley has worked as a consultant and speaker since 1973, with a wide range of companies and individuals on all continents (except Antarctica). Wheatley's interest and ability to spot patterns of behavior common across cultural and institutional variations has been nourished by working in so many different places with so many different individuals. It also helped her stay on top of evolving leadership trends. Wheatley has taught full-time graduate management courses at Cambridge College in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Brigham Young University's Marriott School of Management in Provo, Utah. She has served as a formal adviser for leadership programs in England, Croatia, Denmark, Australia, and the United States, as well as leading projects in India, Senegal, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Mexico, Brazil, Greece, Canada, and Europe, while at Berkana. Margaret has been a member of the National Parks Advisory Board since 2009, and her nomination was confirmed by the President. Her responsibilities have centered on leadership and culture transformation within the 400-plus park system. Wheatley is also the co-founder and President of The Berkana Institute, a non-profit organization formed in 1991. Berkana has been a pioneer in testing novel organizational patterns based on a unified understanding of how biological systems organize, adapt, and evolve. They've collaborated with a diverse group of individuals from all around the world who are strengthening their communities by utilizing the wisdom and richness that already exists in their people, traditions, and environment. Berkana is currently developing Warriors for the Human Spirit, community-learning leaders who train with discipline and devotion to building a stable mind and skilled methods. These spiritual warriors labor with compassion and awareness, swearing not to use anger or fear to achieve their goals. Wheatley is the author of ten books and almost a hundred articles. Her books have been an invitation to consider new ways of being and thinking based on new science, history, and a variety of spiritual traditions.
