Margaret Stohl Biography

Margaret Stohl is the co-author of the Beautiful Creatures novels, which have become a New York Times, USA Today, Publishers Weekly, and international bestseller series (Beautiful Creatures, Beautiful Darkness, Beautiful Chaos & Beautiful Redemption). Beautiful Creatures has been translated into 33 languages and has been published in 44 countries. Viola Davis, Jeremy Irons, Emma Thompson, Emmy Rossum, Alice Englert, Alden Ehrenreich, Zoey Deutch, and Thomas Mann star in the film, which is based on the first book and will be released in theatres on February 13, 2013. It is adapted and directed by Academy Award nominee Richard LaGravenese. In 2010, Beautiful Creatures was a finalist for the ALA William C. Morris YA Debut Award, as well as a finalist for the SCIBA Award, an NYPL Book for the Teen Age, and a YALSA Teens' Top Ten selection. Beautiful Creatures was awarded the #1 Teen Best Book of the Year and the #5 Best Book of the Year overall by Amazon Editors in 2009. Stohl is also the author of Icons, the first novel in the Icons series, which will be released in spring 2013 by Little, Brown. Stohl is a video game industry veteran who co-founded 7 Studios with her husband, Lewis Peterson, after working for Activision (now Activision Blizzard) and Westwood Studios (now Electronic Arts). She has previously been nominated for the Game Developers Conference's Most Innovative Game Design award. Stohl obtained a master's degree in English from Stanford University and finished courses for a Ph.D. in American Studies at Yale University after graduating from Amherst College, where she won the Knox Prize for English Literature. She worked as a teaching assistant at Stanford in Romantic Poetry and Yale in Film Studies. She was a student at the University of East Anglia's Creative Writing department, where she was mentored by Scottish poet George MacBeth. Stohl and her husband live in Santa Monica, California, and enjoy touring the world with their épée fencing children.
