Margaret Keane Biography

Margaret Keane, President and Chief Executive Officer of Synchrony Financial, has a love for new technology and staff development, both of which have helped her establish a reputation as a thought leader in the industry. Since November 29, 2005, Keane has also served as the CEO and president of Retail Consumer Finance in the Americas. Synchrony became the most valuable bank in the United States when it was split out from General Electric as an independent bank. Keane is one of only two women in charge of a publicly listed US bank with a market capitalization of more than $10 billion, the other being Beth Mooney of KeyCorp. Margaret joined GE Capital in 2004 as President and CEO of the Retail Card platform, subsequently increasing her duties to President and CEO of the GE Capital Retail Finance division in 2011. She also had senior positions in consumer financing, vendor financial services, operations, and quality over her 18 years with GE Capital. She started her career with Citibank, where she spent 16 years as a sales, marketing, and operations executive. Margaret is recognized for promoting her workers as a leader, having started numerous development initiatives at GE Capital and sitting on the GE Women's Network cabinet. She shifted the company's emphasis to eCommerce and mobile capabilities, creating new solutions for both corporate and consumer clients. Keane obtained her BA in government and politics in 1981 and her MBA in 1987 from St. John's University in Queens, New York.
