Margaret Huang Biography

Margaret Huang is the president and chief executive officer of the Southern Poverty Law Center, a 25-year campaigner for human rights and racial justice. Huang has fought for social justice and human dignity throughout her career, speaking out against all types of prejudice and injustice. Margaret was the executive director of Amnesty International USA before joining the Southern Poverty Law Center, where she was responsible for directing campaigns to safeguard the human rights of migrants and refugees, torture survivors, gun violence victims, activists, and demonstrators throughout the world. The organization established a variety of new projects on innovation and learning, inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility, and monitoring and evaluation under her leadership, while increasing financial resources by more than half in four years. Huang has lobbied before the United Nations human rights institutions as well as the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, and she has worked with members of Congress on important pieces of legislation. She has written articles and opinion pieces on human rights, and she co-authored a chapter in Praeger Publishers' Human Rights At Home, titled "Going Global — Appeals to International and Regional Human Rights Bodies." Huang, a Tennessee native, was formerly the executive director of the Rights Working Group, which focused on preserving communities' human rights and civil freedoms in the post-9/11 era. She has also worked for Global Rights as the director of the US program, the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Human Rights as program director, The Asia Foundation as program manager, and the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee as committee staff. She graduated from Columbia University with a Master of International Affairs and Georgetown University with a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service.
