Margaret Hamilton was Director of the Software Engineering Division of the MIT Instrumentation Laboratory which developed on-board flight software for the Apollo space program. In one of the critical moments of the Apollo 11 mission Hamilton's team's work prevented an abort of landing on the moon.
Hamilton culminated the Apollo effort by leading her team in performing an empirical analysis based on lessons learned from the development of the Apollo on-board flight software. These lessons were formalized into a theory for systems and software which serves as the origin and much of the foundation of Hamilton's Universal Systems Language (USL).
