Margaret A. Hamburg is commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, where she advances regulatory science and medical product innovation and oversees the implementation of laws to curb tobacco use and enhance food safety. Before joining FDA in 2009, Hamburg was vice president and senior scientist at Nuclear Threat Initiative.
As New York City’s health commissioner in the 1990s, she launched the nation’s first public health bioterrorism preparedness program and a program to curtail the resurgence and spread of tuberculosis. She was assistant secretary for planning and evaluation at the US Health and Human Services Department under President Clinton.
