Marcelo Balboa was a member of the United States soccer team and served as captain during the 1990 and 1994 World Cups. In 1992 and 1994, he was named U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year for his defensive abilities. Marcelo Balboa became the first American player to captain a team 100 times in 1995.
Marcelo Balboa played in the Mexican League in 1995 and 1996 before joining the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer. Balboa became the first American player to play in three World Cups in 1998, joining Eric Wynalda and Tab Ramos.
