Marc Agronin Biography

Recognized as a board certified adult and geriatric psychiatrist, Marc E. Agronin, MD is the author of the acclaimed books The End of Old Age: Living a Longer, More Purposeful Life (2018) and How We Age: A Doctor’s Journey into the Heart of Growing Old (2011). In 1999, he joined the staff of Miami Jewish Health (MJH), one of Florida’s largest not – for – profit long – term care providers, serving as the director of mental health services and the founding director of the memory center and Alzheimer’s clinical research program. In 2015, Dr. Agronin was promoted to Vice President for Behavioral Health and Clinical Research at MJH. He is also an Affiliate Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Neurology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Dr. Agronin is a graduate of Harvard University, summa cum laude and Yale School of Medicine. He completed his residency training in adult psychiatry at Harvard University’s McLean Hospital and then a geriatric psychiatry fellowship at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center. Dr. Agronin is the 2008 recipient of the “Clinician of the Year” award from the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry, and he is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He is also a two time finalist for the Health Care Heroes Award by the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, and in 2013 he was the recipient of the Excellence in Research and Education Award by LeadingAge, a national organization representing 6,000 not – for – profit organizations from across the entire field of aging services. Dr. Agronin is a national expert in Alzheimer’s disease and other geriatric mental health issues, and runs both a memory center and one of Florida’s largest Alzheimer’s clinical research programs. In addition to his popular books, The End of Old Age and How We Age, he is the author of eight other books and hundreds of articles, including Therapy with Older Clients: Key Strategies for Success (2010), Principles and Practice of Geriatric Psychiatry, 2nd Edition (2011; co-editor) Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Dementias: A Practical Guide, 3rd Edition (2014), and a book for caregivers entitled The Dementia Caregiver: A Guide to Caring for Someone with Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Neurocognitive Disorders (2015). Dr. Agronin has been published in the New York Times and Scientific American Mind, and writes regular blogs and articles on aging, health and retirement issues for the Wall Street Journal as part of the Experts panel. Dr. Agronin currently spearheads the creation of a new empathy – based care model called EmpathiCare along with the first EmpathiCare-based village for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, on the campus of Miami Jewish Health.
