Manu Bennett made his professional acting debut in the adolescent drama Paradise Beach in 1993. After that, he appeared in guest appearances on Australian television shows such as Water Rats, All Saints, and Beastmaster. Bennett then featured alongside Claudia Karvan in the French firm Gaumont's miniseries The Violent Earth. Bennett took part in a theatre production in 1996.

He played the title role, gamekeeper Oliver Mellors, in an open-air production of Lady Chatterley's Lover, based on D. H. Lawrence's novel, directed by Australian film/theatre director Robert Chuter, in which he met model/actor Darlene Rada Ford from Bondi Beach, who encouraged him to pursue more serious acting roles abroad.
