Mallun Yen Biography

Mallun Yen is a board director, public company officer, technology executive, entrepreneur, and global intellectual property leader who has successfully established and expanded enterprises disrupted industry conventions, and built dynamic global communities. Mallun has led companies ranging from startups to Fortune 100 enterprises in developing transformational organizations, initiatives, and products using data, technology, and collaboration to shift behaviors and build new revenue streams. He has a deep understanding of Silicon Valley innovation and a proven track record of growth. Mallun was Vice President of Worldwide Intellectual Property at Cisco Systems, Inc. for eight years, where she led and built from the ground up the teams responsible for intellectual property protection of Cisco's technology, products, and innovation around the world, including actions against a major foreign competitor with strong governmental ties and the containment of international and domestic data breaches. She was also a key member of Cisco's renowned M&A team, assisting the company in the acquisition and integration of more than 60 companies, including Linksys ($500 million), Scientific-Atlanta ($6.9 billion), WebEx ($3.2 billion), Airespace ($400 million), Ironport ($830 million), and Tandberg ($3.3 billion). RPX Corporation was founded by Mallun and other Cisco innovators to combat the growth of so-called patent trolls by adopting a unique data-driven, market-based subscription model. She led RPX's venture-backed firm to an IPO in 2011 and over $300 million in annual sales in less than three years as EVP of corporate development and chief business and product officer. She was a member of the board of directors until the company was acquired in 2018. When Mallun led the team that completed the world's largest syndicated patent sale, she gave RPX its defining moment. To purchase 4,000 patent assets from a corporation controlled by Apple, Blackberry, Ericsson, Microsoft, and Sony, RPX collected almost one billion dollars from more than 40 U.S. and foreign licensees, including Google and Cisco. This ground-breaking agreement, which avoided or resolved hundreds of significant cases and calmed tensions among the computer industry's biggest personalities, was so innovative and complicated that it was taught in numerous Stanford Law School courses, including her own, The Business of Intellectual Property. Mallun is currently the co-founder and chief operating officer of SaaStr, the world's biggest community of SaaS creators, executives, and entrepreneurs. The SaaStr Annual, 2,000+ attendance SaaStr Europa, and the SaaStr CoSelling Space in the San Francisco Bay Area are all part of this top organization that delivers the information, community, and events for the business-to-business software ecosystem. Mallun also advises a number of fast-growing businesses and is an operational partner of the $90 million SaaStr Fund. Mallun also serves on the boards of KQED, Northern California's public television station, and ChIPsNetwork.org, a global community for women in technology, law, and policy that she co-founded in 2005 and which, among other things, hosts a free summer institute to inspire high school girls to become advocates, leaders, and innovators. She has taught at Stanford Technology Ventures, Stanford Directors' College, Stanford Law School, and the University of California Haas School of Business as a guest speaker.
