Malcolm McLaren Biography

Malcolm McLaren elicited a response. He's most known for forming the Sex Pistols, possibly the first worldwide renowned punk band, in 1976. The Sex Pistols tapped into deep undercurrents of crankiness, anarchy, and unhappiness with 1970s Britain with one album, two smash songs, and a cut-and-run US tour, igniting a global movement that continues to this day in various ways. McLaren's next destination, according to music fans, was to manage Adam Ant, while disbanding Ant's old band and forming Bow Wow Wow. Early hip-hop, with its mixing, collaging, and tremendous collaborative creation, captured McLaren's restless imagination. Buffalo Gals (including scratching and square-dance calling) and Double Dutch were early attempts to make hip-hop as popular as punk. As early as 2003, he started promoting 8-bit music, which is at the crossroads of music and gaming culture. McLaren co-produced the film Fast Food Nation and directed the TV special The Ghosts of Oxford Street, as well as presenting Malcolm McLaren's Musical Map of London and Life and Times in LA as a film and television producer. Shallow, his enormous 21-part sound artwork, launched in Basel and was later projected across Times Square in 2008. His most recent film, Paris: The Capital of the Twenty-First Century, examined the connection between art and commerce by montaging ideal images of Paris through advertising. McLaren was a Situationist at heart, thinking that shocking activities were the most effective method to influence people's opinions. McLaren passed away in April of 2010.
