Malcolm McLaren elicited a response. He's most known for forming the Sex Pistols, possibly the first worldwide renowned punk band, in 1976. The Sex Pistols tapped into deep undercurrents of crankiness, anarchy, and unhappiness with 1970s Britain with one album, two smash songs, and a cut-and-run US tour, igniting a global movement that continues to this day in various ways.
McLaren's next destination, according to music fans, was to manage Adam Ant, while disbanding Ant's old band and forming Bow Wow Wow. Early hip-hop, with its mixing, collaging, and tremendous collaborative creation, captured McLaren's restless imagination. Buffalo Gals (including scratching and square-dance calling) and Double Dutch were early attempts to make hip-hop as popular as punk.
